Stupid Girl Toys
June 30th 2008 21:05
My younger 2 children are little girls. While I was excited to have a girl, I was also very nervous about it- perhaps a strange feeling for a woman to have. I’ve always felt that I identified better with men for some reason I haven’t ever been able to pinpoint. Then I saw some of the toys available for little girls and it started clicking.
Why is it that little girls have so many toys that glorify appearance alone? I watch kids TV with my son and see the way it is from the commercials. Boys get cool stuff like K-Nex and remote control cars with heavy metal music to accompany it. Girls get Barbie heads to style and Bratz to make into fashion icons with flowery music behind it. No wonder Paris Hilton is so popular- she’s a glorified Barbie head; although I imagine the talking Barbie has more important things to say.
I remember as a child having some girly stuff amid my Transformers- Jem in particular was popular when I was little. Sure, it was cheesy 80’s, but what did we learn from Jem?
Her alter ego was Jerrica- the owner of a record company whose primary concern in life was philanthropy. She used a fancy hologram computer to turn her into Jem so she could rock out and make money which she used to support a home for abandoned children. She showed that a woman can be smart, pretty and fashionable, powerful, artistic, and still have time to care about her fellow man.
The evil character in the story was Pizzazz, who was a spoiled rich girl who made trouble.
Now what dolls are popular? Bratz. Fashion obsessed spoiled little things that have more concern with their own appearance than with anything worthwhile.
We’ve allowed the villain to become worshipped.
It makes me wonder where the stupid boy toys are. I can’t think of a single boy toy that does not have some substance behind it. Action figures always have story to tell. Boys are lucky.
My little one is almost two right now. I’m wondering how the toys we have for little girls can possibly teach them to find power in their minds and actions instead of power in their looks.
Where is Jem when we need her? Showtime Synergy!
